Staffed by certified professionals, the SBDC specializes in providing one-to-one business counseling, management and technical advisement, and educational programs targeted to the needs and interests of small business owners.

Services

The Mohawk Valley SBDC located at MVCC’s thINCubator provides free 1:1 counseling and training to support local small business enterprises. There are no fees for direct counseling, and many of our seminars are available without charge. Our services include:

Access to Funding

We help clients prepare the information needed to apply for funding, and connect them to sources of funding including loans, grants, and economic incentive programs.

Small Business Start-up Assistance

There are many things to think of when starting a small business. Our certified business advisors walk clients through topics including legal business structures, government regulations, basic tax information, recordkeeping, and financing their business.

Business Plan Development

Creating a business plan is the first step in the entrepreneurial process. Our certified business advisors help clients navigate the process of creating a business plan. All SBDC clients also have access to EntreSkills, an interactive, web-based program that helps you refine and develop a business concept.

Financial Projections

Our experts assist clients with the development of financial projections for their businesses. Financial projections are a necessary step in both business planning and funding applications.

Marketing

From market research to advertising, social media strategies, and more, our certified business advisors assist clients with marketing their small businesses.

Research Support

For a business owner, obtaining the right information is as important as finding the right location, or getting the best price. The New York SBDC operates a full-time library called the Research Network.  The Research Network provides free services to New York SBDC clients.

Organization Planning

Our certified business advisors assist clients with strategic planning to achieve their business goals and objectives. Establishing short- and long-term goals as well as staying attuned to ever-changing customer and industry trends is essential for the growth and resiliency of a business.

Government Contracting

The New York SBDC Procurement Assistance Center, located at the Mohawk Valley SBDC, provides specialized assistance for small- and medium-sized firms interested in supplying goods and services to federal, state, and local government agencies. SBDC clients have access to BidLinx, an automated service that monitors more than three thousand government bid source sites daily to identify bid opportunities appropriate for the business.

Minority, Women-Owned, and Veteran-Owned Business Enterprise Program Certifications

Our government contracting coordinator provides the expert guidance necessary to help clients understand how to apply for state and federal small business certifications and programs designed specifically to foster their growth.

Educational Programs and Training Events

The Mohawk Valley SBDC hosts educational programs targeted to the needs and interests of small business owners.

Our programs cover a wide variety of topics of interest to the small business community, from marketing to cybersecurity to financial planning and much more. We regularly offer QuickBooks classes for beginners and advanced users. Educational and training webinars can be viewed from the comfort of your home or office. Attending workshops at our offices provides the advantage of networking with other businesses and meeting subject-matter experts in person.

Meet Our Staff

The SBDC is staffed by certified professionals with the knowledge and experience to provide expert counseling and training to address the many problems inherent in the start-up and operation of a business. SBDC advisors have access to the vast resources of the State University of New York, its faculty, staff, and students, as well as private and public consultants, agencies, and the national Small Business Development Center Research Network.

Paul Arvantides provides business advisement services to a variety of small businesses and entrepreneurs engaged in starting, managing, growing, or purchasing a business. Arvantides has been a business advisor with the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center since 2017. Prior to that position, he acted as a business manager for Northwestern Mutual, was vice president and head of U.S. Services at E4E Healthcare Services LLC in Maryland, and was the president/owner of Medical Coding Services, Inc. out of Baldwinsville. Arvantides holds a bachelor’s degree in health information administration from SUNY Institute of Technology (now SUNY Polytechnic Institute) and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hamilton College.

David Lerman provides business advisement and financial services to a variety of small businesses and entrepreneurs engaged in starting, managing, growing, or purchasing a business, including clients with complex multi-million dollar projects involving multiple banks, the Small Business Association, economic development agencies, and other resource partners. Lerman has been with the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center since 2008, serving first as a business advisor and then transitioning to the senior business advisor position. Previously, he was the business owner/president of Rest Assured Mattress Center, Inc. in Rome and New York Mills, and the vice president of Lerman’s Furniture in Rome. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business and public management from SUNY Institute of Technology (now SUNY Polytechnic Institute) and an associate degree in business management from MVCC.

Roxanne Mutchler directs the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center, providing services to local small businesses in accordance with New York State, State University of New York (SUNY), MVCC, and the Small Business Association. Mutchler has been with the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center since 2009 in a variety of capacities, including NY SBDC government contracting coordinator and acting director. Prior to joining the MV SBDC, she worked as a training design and development coordinator at a local manufacturing company, and was co-owner of Mutchler’s Inc., operating out of Herkimer.

Zach Steffen supports the director and business advisors at the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center. Steffen has been with the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center since 2019 as an associate business advisor. Previously, he was the general manager of North Country Books and the co-owner/president of Pyramid Publishing. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from the University at Albany.

Shelby Sweet provides business advisement services to a variety of small businesses and entrepreneurs engaged in starting, managing, growing, or purchasing a business. Sweet has been with the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center since 2013 as a certified business advisor. She also is a co-owner of George’s Farm Products, Inc., in Clinton and an adjunct professor at Utica College. She earned a master’s degree in management science and a bachelor’s degree in business and public management from SUNY Institute of Technology (now SUNY Polytechnic Institute), and an associate degree in business administration from MVCC.

Gina Hayduk is the New York SBDC’s Government Contracting Coordinator. She offers advisement and expertise to local businesses on the fundamentals of government contracting at the local, state, and federal levels and also assists businesses in identifying bidding opportunities, understanding the procurement process, and applying for various certifications. Hayduk brings a strong background in project management, communications and engineering, having worked for over 28 years for telecommunications companies. She also has years of management, training and contract experience. Hayduk holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
